2019 OVO Energy Women’s Tour Preview

Ahead of the opening stage of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour on Monday (10 June) in Suffolk, four of the race’s previous five champions, Lizzie Deignan, Marianne Vos, Kasia Niewiadoma and Coryn Rivera, spoke at a pre-race media event in Ipswich, looking ahead to the six day race.

The quartet, along with 2015 winner Lisa Brennauer (WNT ROTOR Pro Cycling), feature in a 16-team, 96-rider start list for the sixth edition of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour, which concludes in Carmarthenshire on Saturday 15 June.

[on parcours] “I think like always we’re going to have to be very prepared for the unpredictability of the stages. The only thing we can be sure of is that the first stage is flat and from there on in we have to be prepared for anything because I think those Welsh stages will be really difficult.

“I think our team is really focused on having the opportunity every night on TV to showcase Women’s cycling; we’ll be aggressive and make the racing interesting, and normally that leads to victory.”

[on ambitions] “We’ll be aggressive and make the racing interesting and normally that leads to victories.”

[on her return to racing] “This race was my first idea of when I would return to racing so I’ve come back earlier than expected, and thank goodness because this would be a pretty brutal beginning. I’m going to take a rest after this race, so this is the last block of racing for me before I have a rest.”

[on Stage 2 at the Kent Cyclopark] “I think it’s going to be really painful! It’s been about 15 years since I’ve done a criterium, I might be in trouble. It’s going to be fast, technical and aggressive. There will be lots of accelerations and I think it’ll be a hard stage.”

[on winning the OVO Energy Women’s Tour in 2016] “I think winning overall for me was a huge deal. I’d never won a stage race before – I barely finish stage races normally, so to finish it and win it was very special. I think I probably had some of the strongest legs of my career at the Women’s Tour that year, and to race in front of a British crowd is always incredibly special for me.”

[on team and leadership] “It’s unpredictable and that’s also how we go into this race with an open strategy and see how it turns out and we’ll play that card and it’s better when you have more cards to play especially when it is this hard. Of course a stage victory is always great and we hope to do well in GC.”

[on solo win] “I do believe there are a lot of riders have the opportunity to win from just a solo attack.”

OVO Energy Womens Tour Pre Race Press Conference 2019 by Cycling Shorts

Once more the OVO Energy Women’s Tour offers prize money parity with the men’s Tour of Britain, thanks to award winning independent energy supplier OVO Energy, the title sponsors for a third edition of the race.

Stage One takes place in Suffolk, getting underway from Beccles at 10:30 and featuring a 157.9-kilometre / 98-mile that finishing in Stowmarket, with an expected finish of around 15:00 in the town centre.

Highlights of Stage One will be shown on ITV4 at 20:00 on Monday 10 June with a repeat at 06:25 on Tuesday 11 June on the same channel.  Programmes will be available on demand via the ITV Hub catch up service and via Eurosport in the UK and around the world.

On the eve of Liege-Bastogne-Liege, WNT ROTOR Pro Cycling are happy to announce they will apply for a UCI Women’s World Tour licence in 2020.

WNT ROTOR will put forward an application to be a part of the UCI Women’s World Tour. The new structure which will be introduced by the governing body will become a two-tier system from 2020 and as a team, we plan on being a part of the highest tier.

We are convinced the new system will make female cycling more professional and after having some positive meetings and discussions with UCI president David Lappartient and Morgane Gaultier, the women’s cycling co-ordinator, it looks to be a well thought-out concept and we are hopeful of gaining Women’s World Tour Status.

There are obligations which need to be met, including pay with a newly implemented minimum salary to our riders, as well as other insurances.

The feeling at WNT ROTOR Pro Cycling is that the sport and especially women’s cycling is moving in the right direction and this is another big step forward. We would relish the opportunity to be racing and representing women’s cycling at the top of an ever-changing future.

I think the UCI, David Lappartient and Morgane Gaultier have done a great job, to make an effective change to women’s cycling, we will be registering our interest with excitement to be a part of the 5 world tour teams in 2020.

Yorkshire 2019 UCI Road World Championships Routes and Race Schedule Announced

In October 2016 Yorkshire was awarded the right to host the 2019 Road Cycling World Championships. The winning bid was made jointly by British Cycling, Welcome to Yorkshire, UK Sport and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
We have been waiting patiently to hear the details of the event.
The full routes and race schedule for the Yorkshire 2019 UCI Road World Championships have been officially unveiled in Innsbruck
(Austria).
The racing starts on Saturday 21st September with Para-cycling events before the first UCI World Champions are crowned the following day with the maiden Team Time Trial Mixed Relay. This event will replace the separate men’s and women’s trade team time trials, and will be contested by national teams consisting of three male riders and three female riders.
The male athletes will ride first and the women will replace them on the road as soon as the second male rider has crossed the finish line. Final timings will be taken when the second female rider crosses the finish line, with the fastest team declared the winner.
The Yorkshire 2019 programme will continue through until Sunday 29th September with Individual Time Trials and Road Races for Junior (Under 18), Under 23 and Elite male and female riders.
Harrogate will serve as the destination town for every race, with start locations across the county to ensure the Championships reach as many people as possible.
It is a great honour to be hosting the 2019 UCI Road World Championships. This will be the most inclusive and diverse Championships ever held and cement Yorkshire’s place as a world – class cycling destination.
The countdown is now well and truly on and there will be many people in Yorkshire and across Britain who are looking forward to this iconic event. We can promise huge, passionate crowds, stunning scenery and epic racing.
We have worked hard with the UCI to design a challenging and spectacular range of routes which take in all four corners of the county. We are thrilled to be able to share these routes and are sure they will make for exciting racing

After the Tour de France Grand Départ in 2014 and the consequent creation of the legacy Tour de Yorkshire, this magnificent region has left us in no doubt that the 2019 UCI Road World Championships will be a memorable occasion.
The competitions in Yorkshire will open with the new Team Time Trial Mixed Relay, a UCI initiative that will replace the trade team time trial and will see men and women competing together for their nation.
I cannot wait to witness this first-ever Team Time Trial Mixed Relay, which is part of the UCI’s drive to further increase the attractiveness of our Road World Championships, encourage gender equality, and showcase National Federations and their riders.
In addition, the 2019 UCI Road World Championships will be taking place less than a year out from the Olympic Games, with riders seeking to earn precious qualification points for Tokyo 2020. This will add to the excitement of the racing on the roads of Yorkshire.

The 2018 Championships are currently taking place in Innsbruck – Tirol and Welcome to Yorkshire Chief Executive Sir Gary Verity DL led a packed presentation of the Yorkshire 2019 event on Wednesday evening.
He was joined on stage by UCI President David Lappartient, British Cycling CEO Julie Harrington, and Great Brita in riders Alex Dowsett and Hayley Simmonds. Prime Minister Theresa May concluded the presentation via video message, lending the UK Government’s full support.
The Championships are receiving unprecedented financial backing with the UK Government and UK Sport committing £12 million to deliver a truly world – class event. A further £15 million has been allocated to develop entry – level cycling facilities across England. This commitment means that the 2019 UCI Road World Championships will deliver a legacy that will transform the sporting fabric of the country.

Where to catch OVO Energy Tour of Britain in Scotland

On Sunday 3 September, the streets of Scotland will be abuzz as 20 of the world’s top professional cycling teams take to the roads for the opening stage of the 2017 OVO Energy Tour of Britain, from Edinburgh to Kelso.

Among the top names already confirmed for the race are Team Sky duo Geraint Thomas and Michal Kwiatkowski, recently crowned European Champion Alexander Kristoff from Norway, World Time Trial Champion Tony Martin and multiple British Champion Alex Dowsett.

With just one week to go until the start of the 188-kilometre stage of Britain’s national Tour, we’ve compiled a list of the best vantage points to catch the world’s top riders in action in Scotland.

Stage One starts from outside St Giles Cathedral on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile at 10:30, with spectators advised to arrive for 9:00 as teams begin to arrive and sign-on, with each of the 20 world-class teams being presented to the crowd on the podium.

In addition to promo stands from Tour partners OVO Energy, Oakley and Dare2b all of the team vehicles will be parked on High Street and Cockburn Street ahead of the Grand Depart.

With Stage One using the same loop of roads in the city as the HSBC UK City Ride afterwards, the Meadows will be another great location to watch and see the action twice, especially if you’re riding in the freeride event afterwards.

Spectators are in for an amazing opening stage to this year’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain as they are treated to world-class racing set against the backdrop of some of Scotland’s most iconic and spectacular locations and countryside.

A further spectacular location, sure to feature prominently in the live television coverage on ITV4 is Duddington Low Road through Holyrood Park, with the famous backdrop of Arthur’s Seat.

The East Lothian towns and villages of Musselburgh, Cockenzie and Port Seton, Longniddry, Haddington and Pencaitland all lie on the opening kilometres of the route, while Gifford hosts the first intermediate Eisberg Sprint of the 2017 race at around 11:50, sponsored by leading alcohol free wine brand Eisberg, where riders will battle for points towards the Eisberg Sprints Jersey.

Shortly after riders tackle the first SKODA King of the Mountains climb of the race at Redstone Rigg in the Lammermuir Hills, with the race expected to reach the summit at around midday.

Fans in the Scottish Borders are spoilt for choice on where to watch, with the Tour racing through Duns (approximately 12:30) and Coldstream, where there will be another Eisberg Sprint (approximately 13:00) before passing through the centre of Kelso twice, at around 13:30 and again for the finish at approximately 15:20.

As well as a big screen showing the whole race live, Kelso will host the official promo zone with stands from Tour partners and a static bike challenge.

With the race taking in a 79-kilometre loop of the Scottish Borders, there is also the chance for fans to watch at one of the SKODA King of the Mountains climbs in the beautiful locations of Scott’s View (approximately 14:30) or above Melrose near the Eildon Hills (approximately 14:45). The latter comes just after the final Eisberg Sprint in Melrose High Street.

From the world famous city centre of Edinburgh, via the coast and moors of East Lothian to the beautiful views and towns of the Scottish Borders, Stage One has a bit of everything.

Dame Sarah Storey hails Stoke-on-Trent’s sporting prowess as they get set to welcome Women’s Tour

Paralympian legend Dame Sarah Storey heaped praise on Stoke-on-Trent’s positive attitude towards sport – as she helped to officially launch Stage 2 of the 2017 Women’s Tour which will start and finish in the city.

Great Britain’s most decorated female Paralympian was speaking at an event where full details were revealed for the The Women’s Tour and The Tour Series.

Sarah, who will have her own team in the Tour Series event and has competed in the city in the past.

Stoke-on-Trent is a fantastic city for hosting cycling events. Having cities like this which are up for it make a huge difference to cycling and sport in general, and people here should be very excited about the events which are coming.

Stoke-on-Trent will welcome the world’s top female cyclists on Thursday, June 8 when the city hosts a stage of The Women’s Tour. Stage Two of the UK’s biggest professional women’s race will start and finish in the city centre, giving people the chance to get up close to the action as elite cyclists battle it out on the roads of the city.

All of the world’s top 15 teams will take part in the race, which will start on Upper Market Square, next to the statue of Sir Stanley Matthews, and finish 144.5km later back in the city with riders sprinting for the finish line outside Hanley Town Hall.

The stage will take riders on an anti-clockwise route through Joiners Square, Bucknall, Bentilee, Adderley Green, Park Hall and Meir. The riders will then head out into Staffordshire before returning to the city centre through Baddeley Green and Abbey Hulton, giving residents plenty of opportunities to catch a glimpse of the action for free.

The Women’s Tour will be the second major cycling event to be held in the city this year, following on from Round Two of The Tour Series circuit race which takes place in the city centre on Thursday, May 11.

The Tour Series, which is coming to the city for the ninth time, will feature seven professional men’s teams (8pm), as well as the women’s Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series (6pm), battling it out on a closed road, city centre circuit which starts and finishes on Town Road. Before the races, the day will feature school activities and a corporate grand prix which local businesses and organisations can take part in. There will also be street entertainment around a promotional zone.

We’re delighted to be bringing these high quality sporting events to the city this year.

We have a long and successful association with hosting top cycling events in Stoke-on-Trent but this will be the first time we have held a stage start and finish of the Women’s Tour, which is fantastic news. It will give people the chance to see top class cyclists in front of their own eyes for free.

Combined with the Tour Series, these two events – which will both be televised on TV – will show off our city to a national and international audience as being a lively visitor and leisure destination, further supporting our bid to become UK City of Culture 2021. The races will also draw crowds into the city, which is great news for our businesses and economy, and will hopefully inspire more people to take up cycling and get active.

The Women’s Tour will begin in Northamptonshire on Wednesday, June 7, with the opening stage between Daventry and Kettering and also include stages in Warwickshire and Derbyshire, finishing in central London on Sunday 11 June. A one-hour highlights programme of every stage will be broadcast daily on ITV4 and available on demand via the ITV Hub.

Aberdeen Tour Series circuit revealed for Round 8

The challenging circuit for Britain’s fastest elite cycling race taking to the streets of Aberdeen has today been revealed.

Thursday 25 May will see the centre of Aberdeen transformed to welcome The Tour Series for the first time, turning the city centre into a race circuit for the likes of defending champions JLT Condor, 2014 victors Madison Genesis and the returning ONE Pro Cycling.

The 1.2-kilometre circuit around the compact city centre will provide a stunning backdrop to a fast and furious night of criterium racing, with the beautiful architecture and vocal Scottish crowds setting the perfect scene as the race is broadcast around the world.

Aberdeen is hosting Round Eight of the nationwide Series.

This event will ignite the city’s heart as the cyclists are put to the test racing past some of Aberdeen’s historic landmarks, such as Aberdeen Art Gallery, His Majesty’s Theatre with the start and finish on the city’s iconic Union Street.

We are also encouraging the public to take part in a fun filled day of activities that will see the city centre brought to life by this unique cycling spectacle.

Aberdeen’s position as a must-visit destination for high-profile cultural and sporting events is strengthened as the Tour Series kicks off our ambitious summer events programme. This leading cycling race is part of our wider Aberdeen 365 Events Strategy, a City Centre Masterplan initiative, which will see new events such as The Tour Series and Great Aberdeen Run brought to the city over the coming years.

In total ten teams will take to the Aberdeen circuit, including a Scottish national team, and race it out in the hour long race starting at 19:30.  Earlier in the day an exciting programme of races will take place on a revised version of  the circuit, with events between 13:00 and 18:00 using a  route, that takes  in Belmont Street and Little Belmont Street that will provide a stunning backdrop to the competitive races across the day.

It is great to be welcoming The Tour Series back to Scotland this year and to Aberdeen for the first time. EventScotland is delighted to be supporting the event that will showcase the area and all it has to offer to a TV audience of cycling enthusiasts.

We are looking forward to bringing The Tour Series to Aberdeen this May.  The circuit will showcase the heart of Aberdeen combining a very fast, flowing opening half of the lap with a more technical finale, including the slow last corner and a deceptive drag to the finish line on Union Street.

Aberdeen is one of two Scottish venues hosting rounds of The Tour Series in 2017, with Motherwell hosting Round Seven on Tuesday 23 May.  It will be the third time that the Series has visited the North Lanarkshire venue.

The Tour Series will get underway at Redditch in Worcestershire on Tuesday 9 May, finishing three weeks later in Stevenage on Bank Holiday Monday, 29 May.

Highlights of every round of The Tour Series will be shown on ITV4, with programmes also be available on demand via the ITV Hub.  Action from the Aberdeen round will be on ITV4 at 22:00 on Friday 26 May with a repeat the following daytime.

2017 will be the ninth season of The Tour Series, a unique team based, televised city centre cycling series organised by SweetSpot Group Ltd, the company behind the organisation and promotion of the Tour of Britain and The Women’s Tour.  The Tour Series brings together the very best in British professional teams and male and female riders, competing on town and city-centre circuits in front of packed crowds as a part of a full day of cycling activities.
