Time for a World Cup in a drizzly Manchester and it got off to a blistering start.
Day one roundup of the Track World Cup and it was all about the pursuit!
Team Pursuit Men
The men got the event underway.
In qualifying Team GB (Doull, Clancy, Burke and Tennant) fly out of the blocks. At 1km they’re fastest. At the halfway point the GB quartet are 0.4 seconds up. at 3000m they’re over a second up. Great Britain stop the clock at 3:59.672. They were through to the gold final and received a standing ovation from the crowd.
In the final Denmark took Bronze over the Netherlands. Great Britain take Gold with a fantastic lead out from Ed Clancy 3.58.552 Australia Silver 3.59.064. He commented after the ride, “It was good, this is the start to the Rio Olympics!”
Men’s Team Sprint Men
GB qualify in 43.693 (Kian Emadi, Jason Kenny, Philip Hindes), Germany post a blistering 43.351 to go fastest in qualifying, Robert Forstemann’s thighs being the German teams biggest weapon – with his time of 17.2 in the opening lap. The race for Gold would be between Germany and Russia.

Team Sprint Women
After two heats of women’s team sprint qualifying, the Max Success Pro Cycling trade team of Juhong and Zhong were fastest with a time of 33.507.
Germany produced an impressive 32.992 to go fastest. World and Olympic champions Welte and Vogel were to face off against Great Britain’s James and Williamson in the final. Russia v Max Success Pro Cycling in the bronze medal ride-off.
In the final GB’s Becky James and Victoria Williamson were on top form but they got beaten by the World Champions in style. Germany gold – Team GB Silver.
Team Pursuit Women
Before the race we caught up with Laura Trott and She expressed how the team was raring to go but obviously anxiously waiting to see what sort of time Australia would put in as they currently haven’t shown their colours in the new four woman Pursuit.
Canada put in a great time of 4.28.054. Australia falls short after a false start (4.33.011).
In qualifying Team GB beat their own World Record set a few weeks ago at the World Championships. After 1km Great Britain are a quarter of a second ahead of Canada. At 2km Great Britain are over 2 seconds faster than Canada and a new world record is on the cards. After 3km Great Britain are smooth and polished, over 3 seconds up. Before the girls took to the track for the final I overheard Team GB coaches discussing that they expected the team to go sub world record. Great Britain stop the clock at 4:23.910, smashing their own world record set just a few weeks ago.
When it came to the crunch thought Team GB got the better of all the competition. Bronze went to Australia.

Women’s Scratch Race
Earlier in the day British riders Dani King (GB), Amy Hill (GB) and Katie Archibald (Braveheart.com) qualify for the scratch race. Immediately after the thrill of the women’s Pursuit win Dani had to remount her bike for the Scratch race final. This may have had some impact on her result, with 25 laps to go Dani is in the bunch but Caroline Ryan of Ireland has launched a solo attack and has half a lap on the chasers. 15 laps to go and King was just hanging on. Sofia Arreola of Mexico (sis to CS’s very lovely Nancy) went all out and gained a lap with the peloton trying their hardest to chase her down. Archibald tried her best to escape with a couple of riders but to no avail. The bunch start to split as Dani King hits the front and Katie sees her chance to go for broke. With five laps to go she finally gets her well deserved lap. The pace has been kept so high that Arreola has to work extra hard to keep contact after her daly lone attack. Katie Archibald is the best placed British rider in the final taking the silver podium spot with a gutsy ride. Well deserved Katie! Sofia Arreola for Mexico comes in 4th just missing out. Gold to Poland’s Wojtyra and bronze to Ukraine’s Klimchenko.
Mens Omnium 1 – Flying Lap
Jon Dibben finishes 5th in the opening event of the omnium in what was a very long days racing for him.

Mens Omnium II – Points Race
Boudat of France and Deuhring of the USA both take a lap on the field. Boudat on 32pts and Duehring 26 after the first 5 sprints of 12. Duehring then dramatically loses a lap, leaving his with 6 points. The rider from Trinidad has a tough old race – 3 laps down and still he kept going!
Jon Dibben for GB put in an amazing effort to break free from the pack to no avail, but he kept going for 5pts and a hefty cheer. He then digs again for another try but this time only manages 1pt. Gold went to Boudat of France with 33pts who rides off the front of the pack and has time to wave to the crowds as he crosses the line. Silver De Buyst 20pts, Gate 14pts takes bronze. Jon Dibben manages a respectable 8th. After two events Jon Dibben was sitting in 5th overall for the Omnium.
Mens Omnium III – Elimination Race
This turned out to be the thrills and spills race of the evening. three riders took a nasty tumble. With one rider retiring but the rider who seemed to come out worse scrapes wise was Belgian Jasper De Buyst, literally losing the seat of his pants, he got back on his bike to great applause and a few wolf whistles as he bared all. Not shaken at all he kept going and made it to the final sprint for the line against Thomas Boudat of France. Boudat took the win but there was; in true British underdog supporters style a huge round of applause for De Buyst.
Overall after 3 rounds, Jon Dibben lies in 7th place on 25pts. De Buyst of Belgium took second place in the elimination and retains the overall lead, with Tim Veldt of Netherlands sitting in second place overall.
A few weeks ago my boyfriend Jetse and I did a short visit to Mallorca, he had to do an intense block of training and the guys from Performance United have their training base there so I was excited to catch up with my sister Sofia!
It was impossible not to fall in love with the place, with those amazing views and all the mountains! We arrived at Sofia’s apartment in Alaró, such a nice little town.
Very close to her apartment is the Team House, the boys of the team live there and they also have a weight lifting room, with all the necessary equipment for track riders along with the fantastic watt bikes, and you can’t miss the flags of Ireland, USA, Turkey, Mexico and Spain decorating the room.

We had time to catch up a little bit there with coach Andy Sparks while he was showing us the place and telling us all the advantages that came with training in Mallorca, he even invited Jetse for a ride with the guys.
To me it was clear why my sister doesn’t want to come back to train in Mexico after only a few hours of being there, the Island is really special for bike rides!!! But I was so excited and looking so much forward to go to the track and see the guys in action!

But that didn’t happen until the last day, meanwhile we had time to do some training, enjoy the sun and the beach and we even went for dinner with Jennie Reed and her hubby Brandon Madden, I have to admit I’m such a big fan of Jennie since long time ago when she was a sprinter but this is the first time I’d actually met her and had time to get to know her.
When I asked her, why did she make the change from sprinting to endurance she said she was looking for a new challenge and I think instead Jennie’s creating a challenge to other teams as she rocks in the team pursuit even as much as she did as a sprinter!
Anyways back to the track… The Palma Arena is such a cool place, the track is beautiful and you can feel the great atmosphere at their training sessions, you can hear everyone cheering for each other while they’re doing there efforts and giving tips to each other to improve… its just priceless! But I have to say the biggest supporters at the track are Brandon Madden and Kirk Bausch (husbands of Jennie Reed and Dotsie Bausch) you can hear they screaming “GO, GO, GO!!!” during the whole training.
While Sarah Hammer and Jennie Reed have basically made Mallorca their second home the rest of the Team Pursuit girls (Lauren Tamayo and Dotsie Bausch) come in special periods during the year, this time they were all together as they’re getting ready for London and yes… they are looking STRONG!
Other riders in the team also preparing for London are Martyn Irvine (Ireland) and David Muntaner (Spain), while Recep Unalan (Turkey) and Sofia Arreola (Mexico) are making next year’s World Cup season their major focus.
Coach Andy is looking very optimistic about the Games and I’m sure the boys and girls will get amazing results there, so excited to see them racing and I even got special t-shirts to support them along the way!
It appears the Olympic Test Event; the UCI Track World Cup Final Round was a great success. There were supposedly minor grumbles from cyclists track centre who would have preferred not to have to trek so far for toilet facilities but everything else seems to have had the thumbs up. It seems the venue has been embraced by the majority of the cycling community in attendance. The track and closely controlled temperature seem to have enabled the athletes to achieve some very fast times with a number of new world records being set.
Team GB came out fighting providing a haul of medals and encouragingly for Team GB they are in areas that will count come the London Olympics. The international cyclists seemed to treat the event as a mini Olympics or World Championships. The times are looking very close amongst the top teams. In the men’s sprinting the German team looked to have breadth and depth, the French and Australian’s too were looking on course for a peak later in the season. The Women’s GB endurance riders seem to be on top form with only minor tinkering needed before the major events of the season. The Men’s endurance team look like they need a little more work but they had a great result (taking silver) with admittedly less time than they would have liked to train together, but they will no doubt be addressing that in the coming months. They seemed very relaxed and happy with their performance so I think we can expect more.
I can’t wait to see the cream of the worlds track cyclists battle it out in Australia for the World Championships, it’s going to be a wonderful summer of competitive cycling. Track cycling is in rude health and it’s a great example to other sports particularly for the camaraderie and respect between teams.

My sister had a little break from her training camp in Mallorca to do the Mexican Track Nationals. I was so excited because the last time I saw her was back in March at the Track Worlds in the Netherlands. Our schedules are so different I hardly get to see her.
We had some catch up time, we went to all our favorite restaurants (Mexican food of course!) and had a really good time before going to Aguascalientes for the track Nationals. We did a road trip two days before the competition, it was only six hours drive so it wasn’t that bad and it was a good opportunity to talk and get updates on what we’d both been doing in our lives.
When we arrived and did our first training session at the track we knew it was the moment of truth, we were going for all or nothing. All the training and the hard work was going to be tested and we had to compete one more time for that gorgeous Mexican jersey.
Unfortunately my competition was soon over due to a back injury that has been holding me back since the start of this year. On the other hand my sister did an awesome job, she won the individual pursuit on the first day and showed a superior level of skill at the rest of the competition, I guess training with the World Champion [Sarah Hammer] helps a bit!

Her coach Andy [Sparks] was very happy with her results, “Great first day of racing at the Champs of Mexico for Sofia, getting the fiesta started with a win in the individual pursuit”.
We started the omnium the second day. Sofi and my younger sister Chely raced with our local team “AH” and I raced with my team Horizon Fitness-Prendas Ciclismo RT, so we were rivals for the first time! It was weird, we always race together but this time it was completely different it added more fun to the competition.
Sofia won the flying lap and then I lapped the bunch 3 times to win the points race, the classification was very close and Sofia was beating me in the overall classification by one point. Then it was time for the elimination race, my back was in so much pain. Sofia won again and I finished in 4thplace, at the end of the day Sofia was leading the overall classification and I was still in

contention for medals but my coach and I decided that it was better if I quit the competition because I didn’t want to have more damage done to my back.
Very disappointing news as I won two gold medals at the Nationals last year and was hoping to at least defend my titles but my health comes first.
The second day of the omnium started, Sofia was leading with a comfortable advantage and she did her best to keep the lead. She won the individual pursuit of the omnium and then it was time for the scratch race, I have to say that it was a very chaotic race!
There were several attacks as the 2nd, 3rd and 4thplace were very close in the GC [General Classification], then Chely made an attack and got away, in the final lap Sofi was way ahead in the sprint and everyone crashed behind her. One of the riders touched Sofia’s wheel by accident and that caused the crash. Some of the riders were in a very bad way and had to go to hospital, even one of the race’s commissaries was injured!
Accident At the Mexican Nationals
There were broken bones, blood and many, many scars! Only my two sisters were fine… it was devastating, so the judges decided to end the race right there and they didn’t do the omnium’s final event (500 metres).
So that meant that Sofia won another National Jersey to add to her big collection, she showed again she was the strongest in the competition but still she was very sad because her rivals crashed, “I can’t even think about the victory, I just hope the rest of the girls are ok…”.

One of the biggest surprises of the championships was the comeback of Belem Guerrero (former Olympic silver medalist) and Nancy Contreras (former Jr World Champ of 500 metres). Belem retired after a bad season before the Beijing Olympics’ and Nancy just had a baby four months ago!
They were both in good form, Nancy was looking super fit even after having a baby! It seems like she’s worked really hard to get her fitness back to win two national titles. Belem was also looking very good, she was winning the points race after lapping the bunch once and just when she was getting ready to make another attack she crashed! It was again a bad crash… she broke three ribs and couldn’t keep on racing, such a shame! She is such a talented rider and an icon of Mexican Cycling.
This Championships had a lot of surprises, crashes and emotional moments. It was really nice to be there and have the whole experience (even if I had to end my race sooner than expected…).
With this results Sofia has secured her place in the PanAm Games [Pan-American Games] this October, this event is very important for Mexico because it’s a big competition, a huge test before the Olympic Games in 2012 and also because it will be held in Mexico this time! What a better feeling that racing for the National Team in your own country!
Sofia is now in an altitude camp in Colorado and will return to Mexico to ride the team pursuit and the omnium in the PanAm Games and after that she will be more than ready to start the World Cup season!
